Brothers and Epitaphs

Last evening, we ventured out to see the Encounter Team in Honesdale, as planned. I was glad we went. The music was a great blessing, and I was able to see many friends who have been such a support and encouragement to us.

This picture was taken of me and my brothers (Bob, left and Scott, right) while they were visiting us from CO and SC last week. [Note the Lazy Boy - a feature in most of the photographs that include me these days. This is my control pad. The nucleus of my nerve center. My nesting place.] We had a great time together and I will always be grateful for that time provided for us by the Lord. My brothers are the nicest guys you will ever meet. I enjoyed watching them play with our younger son and cheerfully tackling items on the honey-do list that my wife prepared for me months ago.

This afternoon, my wife and I have a meeting with a funeral director to select a box and a grave marker. Whatever happened to pine and a simple granite marker!

Thinking about these things, my mind has been running through epitaphs these past few days.

This might do . . .

To be absent from the body is to be home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:7).

I enjoy reading humorous epitaphs. Here a few I have seen over the years . . .

Found in a Georgia cemetery: I told you I was sick!

Born 1903 - Died 1922: Looked up the elevator shaft to see if the car was on the way down. It was.

A scientist who died at the age of 85: He died learning.

All dressed up and no place to go.

I like this one . . .

Remember, friend, when passing by,
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, soon you will be,
Prepare for death and follow me.

To which someone added:

To follow you I'm not content.
Until I know which way you went.

Some of these were found in the opening chapter of Jim George's book, A Man After God's Own Heart.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, I agree with George that we should all seek to have the epitaph ascribed to David by God:

I have found David son of Jessee a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do (Acts 13:22).

And one other that should describe all followers of Jesus Christ:

I have sinned; I have repented; I have trusted; I have loved; I rest; I shall rise; I shall reign.

O my soul. I am struck by the courage dignity you and Merrily are facing these situations. As a mom of three sons, I am touched by the beautiful picture of you and your bros. It is the cry of every mother to know that her children are close. I always tell my boys that they are each other's best friends. I think putting your words in a book would be inspirational and a treasure not only for your family but for many people. May the Lord grant you comfort and peace as you make this very significant trip. We are praying and even have your name on our kitchen blackboard (this is a highly coveted place, btw).

Love in Christ,

The W-H family

NO joke but one of your friend really looks like Bruce Willis. But enough of that, I want to know if do you also attend in Covenant marriage Seminars?
